Don't Steal
You shall not steal.
You shall not steal.
Keep me from having to steal
Two things I asked of You, Do not refuse me before
I die: Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is my portion, That I not be full and deny You and say, "Who is the
LORD?" Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.
Repentance: no more stealing, but work
He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own
hands what is good, so that he will have something
to share with one who has need.
Not paying your worker is theft
You shall not oppress
your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired man are not
to remain with you all night until morning.
God will punish those who steal from the poor
Do not rob
the poor because he is poor, Or crush the afflicted at the gate;
For the LORD will plead
their case And take the life of those who rob them.
Woe to those who scheme iniquity, Who work out
evil on their beds! When morning comes, they do it, For it is in the power of
their hands. They covet fields and then seize them, And houses, and take them away. They rob
a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.
Therefore thus says the LORD, "Behold, I am planning against this
family a calamity From which you cannot remove your necks; And you will not
walk haughtily, For it will be an evil time.”
Neighbor's property stolen
If a man gives his neighbor money or goods to keep
for him and it is stolen from
the man's house, if the thief is
caught, he shall pay double. If the thief
is not caught, then the owner of the house shall appear before the judges, to determine whether he laid his
hands on his neighbor's property. For every breach of trust, whether it is for ox, for donkey, for
sheep, for clothing, or for any
lost thing about which one says, 'This is it,' the case of both parties shall
come before the judges; he whom the judges condemn shall pay double to his
neighbor.
Kidnapping
If a man is caught kidnapping any of his
countrymen of the sons of Israel ,
and he deals with him violently or sells him, then that thief shall die; so you shall purge the evil from among you.
Repay fourfold
Then the LORD sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said, "There were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a great many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb Which he bought and nourished; And it grew up together with him and his children. It would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom, And was like a daughter to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man, And he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd, To prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him; Rather he took the poor man's ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him." Then David's anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die. He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion."
Nathan then said to David, "You are the man!
II Samuel 12:1-7
Men do not despise a thief if he steals To satisfy himself when he is hungry;
But when he is found, he must repay sevenfold; He
must give all the substance of his house.
