Honor your parents
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
Exodus 20:12
Obey your parents
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is
right. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a
promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE
EARTH.
Ephesians 6:1-3
Violence against parents
He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be
put to death. He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to
death.
Exodus 21:15, 17
Rebellious Child
If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will
not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even
listen to them, then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out
to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown. They shall say to the
elders of his city, 'This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not
obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.' Then all the men of his city shall
stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all
Israel will hear of it and fear. If a man has committed a sin worthy of death
and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse shall not hang
all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he
who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which
Yahweh your God gives you as an inheritance.
Deuteronomy 21:18-23
Listen to your parents
My son, observe the commandment of your father And do
not forsake the teaching of your mother; Bind them continually on your heart;
Tie them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; When you
sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. For
the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline
are the way of life
Proverbs 6:20-23
Caring for your parents
Jesus was also saying to them, "You are experts at
setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. For Moses
said, 'Honor your father and your mother.' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother is to be put to death.'; but you say, 'If a man says to his father or
his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say,
devoted to God),' you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his
mother; thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have
handed down; and you do many things such as that."
Mark 7:9-13
Honor to parents before sacrifice to God
Elijah departed from there and found Elisha the son of
Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with
the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him. He left
the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Please let me kiss my father and
my mother, then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back
again, for what have I done to you?" So he returned from following him,
and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the
implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose
and followed Elijah and ministered to him.
I Kings 19:19-21
Surrender to Jesus before honor of parents
Jesus said to another, "Follow Me." But he said,
"Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father." But He said to him,
"Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim
everywhere the kingdom of God." Another also said, "I will follow
You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home." But Jesus said to him, "No one, after
putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of
God."
Luke 9:59-62
"Hating" parents for Jesus
Jesus said, "If anyone comes to Me, and does not
hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters,
yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not carry
his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.”
Luke 14:26-27
Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his
child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to
death. You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has
endured to the end who will be saved….Do not think that I came to bring peace
on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father and a daughter against her mother and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man's enemies will be the members of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not
worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of
Me.
Matthew 10:21-22, 34-37
One must leave his parents
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife. And the two will become one flesh. This
mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.
Ephesians 5:31-32
