Don't commit adultery
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:15
Don't commit fornication
You shall not have intercourse with your neighbor's
wife, to be defiled with her. You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a
female; it is an abomination. Also you shall not have intercourse with any
animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to
mate with it; it is a perversion. Do not defile yourselves by any of these
things; for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have
become defiled. For the land has become defiled, therefore I have brought its
punishment upon it, so the land has spewed out its inhabitants.
Leviticus 18:20, 22-25
Adultery leads to death
My son, give attention to my wisdom, Incline your ear to
my understanding; That you may observe discretion And your lips may reserve
knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey And smoother than oil is
her speech; But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged
sword. Her feet go down to death, Her steps take hold of Sheol. She does not
ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it. Now then,
my sons, listen to me And do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your
way far from her And do not go near the door of her house, Or you will give
your vigor to others And your years to the cruel one; And strangers will be
filled with your strength And your hard-earned goods will go to the house of an
alien; And you groan at your final end, When your flesh and your body are
consumed; Drink water from your own
cistern And fresh water from your own well. Should your springs be dispersed
abroad, Streams of water in the streets? Let them be yours alone And not for
strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of
your youth. As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at
all times; Be exhilarated always with her love. For why should you, my son, be
exhilarated with an adulteress And embrace the bosom of a foreigner? For the ways of a man are before the eyes of
the LORD, And He watches all his paths. His own iniquities will capture the
wicked, And he will be held with the cords of his sin. He will die for lack of
instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he will go astray.
Proverbs 5:1-11, 15-23
Don't desire the adulteress
Do not desire the adulteress’ beauty in your heart, Nor
let her capture you with her eyelids. For on account of a harlot one is reduced
to a loaf of bread, And an adulteress hunts for the precious life. Can a man
take fire in his bosom And his clothes not be burned? Or can a man walk on hot
coals And his feet not be scorched? So is the one who goes in to his neighbor's
wife; Whoever touches her will not go unpunished. Men do not despise a thief if
he steals To satisfy himself when he is hungry; But when he is found, he must
repay sevenfold; He must give all the substance of his house. The one who
commits adultery with a woman is lacking sense; He who would destroy himself
does it. Wounds and disgrace he will find, And his reproach will not be blotted
out. For jealousy enrages a man, And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
He will not accept any ransom, Nor will he be satisfied though you give many
gifts.
Proverbs 6:25-35
The look of adultery and divorce
You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT
ADULTERY'; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for
her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye
makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you
to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into
hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you;
for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your
whole body to go into hell. It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM
GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE'; but I say to you that everyone who divorces
his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and
whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Matthew 5:27-32
Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking,
"Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?"
And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from
the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL
LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME
ONE FLESH '? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has
joined together, let no man separate." They said to Him, "Why then
did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?"
He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to
divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. And I say
to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another
woman commits adultery." The disciples said to Him, "If the
relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to
marry." But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement,
but only those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born
that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs
by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of
the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it."
Matthew 19:3-12
Sex with a prostitute is fornication
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a
prostitute? May it never be! Or do you not know that the one who joins himself
to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, "THE TWO SHALL BECOME
ONE FLESH." But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with
Him. Flee immorality.
I Corinthians 6:14-18
The husband and wife are one
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the
church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having
cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to
Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such
thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love
their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;
for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as
Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body. FOR THIS
REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE,
AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. This mystery is great; but I am speaking
with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among
you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it
that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:25-33
