Remember the sabbath day, to keep it
holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a
sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or
your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your
sojourner who stays with you. For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the
earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day;
therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
Exodus 20:8-11
Food not to be collected on the Sabbath
When the layer of dew evaporated,
behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing,
fine as the frost on the ground. When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to
one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And
Moses said to them, "It is the bread which Yahweh has given you to eat.
This is what Yahweh has commanded, 'Gather of it every man as much as he should
eat; you shall take an omer apiece according to the number of persons each of
you has in his tent.'" The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much
and some little… Moses said to them, "Let no man leave any of it until
morning." But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until
morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them… Now
on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one.
When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, then he said to them, "This is what
Yahweh meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to Yahweh. Bake
what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put
aside to be kept until morning." So they put it aside until morning, as
Moses had ordered, and it did not become foul nor was there any worm in it. Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is
a sabbath to Yahweh; today you will not find it in the field. Six days you
shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be
none." It came about on the seventh
day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. Then
Yahweh said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and
My instructions? See, Yahweh has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you
bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man
go out of his place on the seventh day." So the people rested on the
seventh day.
Exodus 16:14-30
No work on the Sabbath
Speak to the sons of Israel, saying,
'You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you
throughout your generations, that you may know that I am Yahweh who sanctifies
you. Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone
who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it,
that person shall be cut off from among his people. For six days work may be
done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to
Yahweh; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.
So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath
throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.' It is a sign between Me
and the sons of Israel forever.”
Exodus 31:13-17
No working in Jerusalem on the Sabbath
In those days I saw in Judah some who
were treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and
loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs and all kinds of loads,
and they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. So I admonished them
on the day they sold food. Also men of Tyre were living there who imported fish
and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the
sabbath, even in Jerusalem. Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to
them, "What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath
day? Did not your fathers do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this
city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning
the sabbath." It came about that
just as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded
that the doors should be shut and that they should not open them until after
the sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load
would enter on the sabbath day.
Nehemiah 13:15-19
No normal ways on the Sabbath
If because of the sabbath, you turn
your foot From doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a
delight, the holy day of Yahweh honorable, And honor it, desisting from your
own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word, Then you
will take delight in Yahweh, And I will make you ride on the heights of the
earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the
mouth of Yahweh has spoken."
Isaiah 58:13-14
Sabbath is for the benefit of humanity
At that time Jesus went through the
grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples became hungry and began to pick
the heads of grain and eat. But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him,
"Look, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath." But
He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he became hungry,
he and his companions, how he entered the house of God, and they ate the
consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him,
but for the priests alone? Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath
the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and are innocent? But I say to you
that something greater than the temple is here. But if you had known what this
means, 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT A SACRIFICE,' you would not have condemned
the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." Departing from
there, He went into their synagogue. And a man was there whose hand was
withered. And they questioned Jesus, asking, "Is it lawful to heal on the
Sabbath?"-- so that they might accuse Him. And He said to them, "What
man is there among you who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath,
will he not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable then is a
man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." Then
He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand!" He stretched it out, and
it was restored to normal, like the other.
Matthew 12:1-13
Sabbath is a day for freedom
And He was teaching in one of the
synagogues on the Sabbath. And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had
a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could not
straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her,
"Woman, you are freed from your sickness." And He laid His hands on
her; and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God. But the
synagogue official, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying
to the crowd in response, "There are six days in which work should be
done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day." But
the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites, does not each of you on
the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to
water him? And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has
bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond
on the Sabbath day?"
Luke 13:10-16
Jesus does God's work on the Sabbath
For this reason the Jews were persecuting
Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. But He answered them,
"My Father is working this day, so I also am working."
John 5:16-17
We may not judge others about their Sabbath
Therefore no one is to act as your
judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a
Sabbath day— things which are a mere
shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.
Colossians 2:16-17
We practice our days as before God
One person regards one day above
another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced
in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who
eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not,
for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. For not one of us lives
for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the
Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we
are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be
Lord both of the dead and of the living. But you, why do you judge your
brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we
will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written, "AS I
LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE
PRAISE TO GOD." So then each one of us will give an account of himself to
God.
Romans 14:5-12
