No Other Gods
I am
Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt ,
out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exodus 20:2-3
Yahweh is Alone
Hear, O
Israel !
Yahweh is our God, Yahweh is alone! You shall love Yahweh your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5
Worshiping God is serious
For the
wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that
which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to
them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal
power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what
has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God,
they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their
speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they
became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in
the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling
creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to
impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they
exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature
rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Romans 1:18-25
Worshiping God alone is loyalty to Him
Then
the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of Yahweh, served the Baals and
the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods
of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; thus they forsook the
LORD and did not serve Him. The anger of Yahweh burned against Israel , and He
sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of
Ammon. They afflicted and crushed the sons of Israel
that year; for eighteen years they afflicted all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in Gilead
in the land of the Amorites.
The
sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan
to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was
greatly distressed. Then the sons of Israel cried out to Yahweh, saying,
"We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have forsaken our God and
served the Baals." Yahweh said to the sons of Israel , "Did I not deliver you
from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines? Also
when the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, you cried
out to Me, and I delivered you from their hands. Yet you have forsaken Me and
served other gods; therefore I will no longer deliver you. Go and cry out to
the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your
distress." The sons of Israel
said to Yahweh, "We have sinned, do to us whatever seems good to You; only
please deliver us this day." So they put away the foreign gods from among
them and served Yahweh; and He could bear the misery of Israel no
longer.
Judges 10:6-16
No one can serve two Lords
No one
can serve two lords; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he
will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Matthew 6:24
Worshiping other gods is worshiping demons
The
things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God;
and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. You cannot drink the cup of
the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and
the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger
than He, are we?
I Corinthians 10:20-22
God is jealous
Do you
not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore
whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do
you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: "He jealously desires
the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"? But He gives a greater grace.
Therefore it says, "GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE
HUMBLE." Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from
you.
James 4:4-7
