Using God's name pointlessly
You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain,
for Yahweh will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Exodus 20:7
Cursing Yahweh is death
Now the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an
Egyptian, went out among the sons of Israel ;
and the Israelite woman's son and a man of Israel struggled with each other in
the camp. The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name and cursed. So
they brought him to Moses. (Now his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter
of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) They put him in custody so that the command of
the LORD might be made clear to them. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
"Bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and let all who heard him
lay their hands on his head; then let all the congregation stone him. You shall
speak to the sons of Israel ,
saying, 'If anyone curses his God, then he will bear his sin. Moreover, the one
who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death; all the
congregation shall certainly stone him. The alien as well as the native, when
he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.”
Leviticus 24:10-16
Speaking falsely in God's name is death
Now in the same year, in the beginning of the reign of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah the
son of Azzur, the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to Jeremiah in the house
of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, Thus
says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, 'I have broken the yoke of the king
of Babylon. Within two years I am going to bring back to this place all the
vessels of the LORD'S house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
took away from this place and carried to Babylon .
And the prophet Jeremiah said, "Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD
confirm your words which you have prophesied to bring back the vessels of the
LORD'S house and all the exiles, from Babylon
to this place. Yet hear now this word which I am about to speak in your hearing
and in the hearing of all the people! The prophets who were before me and
before you from ancient times prophesied against many lands and against great
kingdoms, of war and of calamity and of pestilence. The prophet who prophesies
of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be
known as one whom the LORD has truly sent." Then Hananiah the prophet took
the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. Hananiah spoke in
the presence of all the people, saying, "Thus says the LORD, 'Even so will
I break within two full years the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of
all the nations.'" Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way. Then Jeremiah
the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, "Listen now, Hananiah, the LORD
has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. Therefore thus says
the LORD, 'Behold, I am about to remove you from the face of the earth. This
year you are going to die, because you have counseled rebellion against the
LORD.'" So Hananiah the prophet died in the same year in the seventh
month.
Jeremiah 28:1-17
False teachers in God's name bring destruction
False prophets also arose among the people, just as
there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce
destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift
destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of
them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will
exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and
their destruction is not asleep.
II Peter 2:1-3
Interpreters of God's law must think of God's holiness
Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by
the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is
obligated.' You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the
temple that sanctified the gold? And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, that is
nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.' You blind
men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the
offering? Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and
by everything on it. And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the
temple and by Him who dwells within it. And whoever swears by heaven, swears
both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.
Matthew 23:16-22
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit
The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying about Jesus, "He
is possessed by Beelzebul," and "He casts out the demons by the ruler
of the demons." Jesus replied, "Truly I say to you, all sins shall be
forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever
blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an
eternal sin "— because they were saying, "He has an unclean
spirit."
Mark 3:22, 28-30
False prophets don't act with God's mercy
Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make
the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood
of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks
out of that which fills the heart. The good man brings out of his good treasure
what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil.
But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an
accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be
justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
Matthew 12:33-37
